Sri Lankan Love Cake: A Sweet Slice of History and Tradition
Sri Lankan love cake is more than a dessert; it’s a cherished symbol of love and care. Traditionally baked during Christmas and special occasions, this treat carries the flavours and stories of generations. Growing up in Sri Lanka, love cake was a treasured gift, its rich aroma filling the room. A plain looking cake that only reveals its nature in the tasting of it.
A Cake With a Rich History
Sri Lankan love cake traces its roots to Portuguese colonial times in the 16th and 17th centuries. Some say it was baked to win the hearts of foreign suitors, while others believe its name reflects the effort and care required to make it. With pumpkin preserve (puhul dosi) hinting at Portuguese influence and local spices like cardamom, nutmeg, and cinnamon adding a Sri Lankan twist, this cake is a true blend of cultures
The Recipe
Here’s a simplified recipe for Sri Lankan love cake so you can recreate this nostalgic treat at home: This recipe is based on the one found in the iconic Daily News Cookery book . I’ve adjusted it to suit me.
Ingredients
200g semolina
200g butter, melted
6 eggs, beaten
400g sugar (I prefer less)
250g cashews, finely chopped
100g pumpkin preserve ( I substituted pumpkin puree to keep the taste)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp rose water
1 tsp ground cardamom
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Zest of 1 lime
A pinch of salt
Instructions
Prepare the Semolina: Toast the semolina in a dry pan over medium heat until golden. Set aside to cool.
Mix the Batter: In a large bowl, combine the melted butter and sugar until smooth. Gradually add the beaten eggs, mixing well after each addition.
Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Fold in the toasted semolina, chopped cashews, and pumpkin preserve. Add vanilla extract, rose water, spices, lime zest, and salt, mixing gently to combine.
Bake the Cake: Preheat your oven to 150°C (300°F). Grease and line a baking tin with parchment paper. Pour the batter into the prepared tin and bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the top is golden and a skewer inserted comes out clean.
Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool completely before slicing. Serve with a cup of Sri Lankan tea for the perfect pairing.
